It is your responsibility to keep this log up-to-date. You fill in any time you start a new book or any time you finish. You must spell the title and author's name correctly and both should be capitalized. Our first entry will be done in class and then you need to add your at-home reading books as needed. When you need more lines, let me know!

Dear Willy,
This week's wiki assignment is to write a letter back to me about the book you are reading at home. You can write about Fish In A Tree or your next book (remember to put it on the log!). Tell me if you like the book and why or why not. Please give two examples to support your opinion, (examples of sentence starters for your example: "I liked this book because... I also thought that....".) Your letter should be at least 3 complete sentences long. It should include the 5 parts of a friendly letter, date, greeting, body, closing, and your name. You can write more, but that's up to you! Post your letter right below mine. I'm looking forward to reading your letter!
Best Wishes,
Mrs. McGinnity..

Dear Mrs.McGinnity
I have started to read a book called Tom Gates. It is about a boy Named Tom and he loves to draw, hang out with his best friend Derek, annoy his sister Delia and listen to Dude3 (a music group). My first reason why I like this book is because it is very humorous. My second reason why i like this book is because he has a differentt personality, like he doesn't care what other people think he's just... himself. Last but not least my third reason why i like this book so much is because the book is very dramatic.
Sincerely,
Willy Monteiro

Dear Willy,
Hello! I hope your week is off to a great start. This week's assignment is to use the Venn Diagram we made in class and write me a letter that compares and contrasts the book, The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler, with the movie version. (In your letter you can just call it The Mixed Up Files.) You should give an example of one major way they are the same, and one major way they are different. Your final sentence should explain to me which one you liked better and WHY (that means use ,EVIDENCE). Remember, you must include the 5 parts of a friendly letter: date, greeting, body, closing and your name. You must also post your letter right below this one. Proofread too!
I look forward to reading your letter.
Love,
Mrs. McGinnity

Dear Mrs.McGinnity
Hi! My first reason how they movie and the book are different is Mrs.Frankweiler does not play cards with Jamie in the movie but in the book they do. My second reason is how they are the same, They are the same because they both sleep in the Metropolitian Museum of Art.
I liked the book better because it was more action packed when they stayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Thank you for reading my letter.
Your Student,
William Monteiro

Dear Willy,
Thank you for your letter. I am curious when you say the book was more action-packed. What action did you miss from the book that was not in the movie? Was it when they almost got caught by Jamie's class on the field trip? You need to give examples to help your reader understand your opinion.
In class we are reading Eleven. What do you think is important to know about Sam's character? What is an important character trait that you think describes him and WHY? What are your predictions for what will happen next to Sam in the story and why do you think that? Your letter should answer the 3 questions above and should include the 5 parts of the friendly letter.
I look forward to reading your letter!
Love, Mrs. McGinnity

Dear Mrs. McGinnity
Hey! My first answer of why Sam is important is that i think that Sam is important because he is a really big part of the story because the story kind of revolves around him. I think a big character trait of Sam is mischievous because he is sneaking up to his attic in the middle of the night, and does not tell a adult. My predictions for the story is that he is going to get caught and also start to date Caroline.
Love,
William Monteiro

Dear Willy,
Thank you for your last letter about Eleven. Now that you have reached the end of the book I'd like you to think about Sam's character at the beginning of the story and at the end. What important life-lesson do you think Sam learned from his experiences in the story? What did you learn by reading this book? This is sometimes called the author's message or theme. Be sure to answer both questions, even if you think both you and the character learned the same thing. Don't forget all 5 parts of the friendly letter! Post your letter below mine.
Love,
Mrs. McGinnity
p.s. you MUST have an at-home reading book listed. Your last two books were graphic novels which are read quickly. Please pick a suitable chapter book next.

December 6, 2017
Dear Mrs.McGinnity
I Think Sam was a very humble person in the beginning until he met Caroline. And then as they started to become friends Sam started to be a little bit more mischievous, but he was always very mischievous. But when Sam and Caroline started to do stuff that he wouldn’t usually try, like he started to be more determined to try to read but I also think Sam at the end of the book, he was very determined. For example Sam wanted to go see the children’s home, but he also started to be more determined by trying to read and write. What I Learned in the story was that to not ever worry about tomorrow in live today like it’s your last one, I think that Sam did that very well because he didn’t take any anything for granted.
Sincerely,
William Monteiro

Happy New Year!
For your first wiki letter of the new year, please make sure your book log is up-to-date. You should be reading a good fit chapter book 20 minutes each night.
Next, we are working on monitoring our comprehension as we read to make sure we really understand what we are reading. Think about your at-home reading book. Answer two of the monitoring questions about your book in your friendly letter back to me. Make sure you include all 5 parts of a friendly letter.
Love,
Mrs. McGinnity

Monitoring for Comprehension Questions (pick 2)
1. What is happening in the story?
2. What is happening to the characters?
3. Is the character changing?
4. What do I think will happen next?
5. What is the problem?

January 19, 2018
Dear Mrs.McGinnity
The book I started to read is called Al Capone shines my shoes by Gennifer Choldenko. What I think is going to happen next is that Al Capone will kidnap Moose Flanagan and take him overseas away from his friends and family. The main problem of the story is Moose trying to escape the island of Alcatraz.

Dear Willy,
We have been working on cause and effect in reading. Cause is the reason something happens and effect is the result, what actually does happen due to the cause. We sometimes call it reason & result.
Think about your at-home reading book. Identify an important example of cause and effect. It should be important because it some how impacts the character or the story's plot. Think of it this way, if it DIDN'T happen, the action or the story would be completely different. EXPLAIN why this cause and effect example is important to the narrative.
I look forward to reading your letter!
Love, Mrs. McGinnity

Dear Mrs.Mcginnity
The book i am reading is Big Nate in class by himself. The cause is Nate not studying for his test and he has a test that day that he did not know about. The effect was that he is now going to have a bad grade. But instead he made a plan, his plan is to skip school, but that can not happen because his teacher said if he gets a bad grade on that test he would have to do summer school. This impacts the character because he is trying to avoid school but if he does he would have to do summer school. If he did go to school he would get a bad grade on his test and he would have to do summer school. Either way he would have to do summer school.

MAKE SURE YOUR BOOK LOG IS UP-TO-DATE YOU SHOULD BE DONE WITH BIG NATE AS IT IS FAR TOO EASY FOR YOU TO HAVE ON YOUR LOG FOR MORE THAN A DAY.
3-5-18
Dear Willy,
As we saw in class, when we read we can learn from and teach our characters. This week here is what you need to do: Introduce me to your main character and tell me two or three important character traits. (one sentence.) Then tell me about a time when your main character interacted with another character in the story (this should only be about one sentence.) Finally you can decide to share with me the advice you would want to give your character OR you can tell me what you learned from your character's behavior. I look forward to understanding what you INFERRED from your character's behavior.
Love,
Mrs. McGinnity

Dear Mrs.McGinnity
I am so sorry about my book log i was too caught up with other things and i forgot to add my book into the log.I am reading the first Harry Potter book. The main characters name is as you guessed Harry Potter. Harry is sort of a mysterious kid because he went through a lot of things when he was a kid and his mom died at a really young age and now he has to live with his aunt that he absolutely hates, But Harry is also a depressed kid because he has to live under their staircase and he gets locked in their. But the one character Harry absolutely hates is this boy named Dudley, Harry does not like Dudley because Harry thinks Dudley is spoiled because Harry gets treated like he is a piece of trash but for dudley he is treated like royalty. And the advice i would like to give to Harry is to live life to fullest and dentate the small things bring you down.

Dear Will,
Please use your Storyworks magazine and choose a side about our recent discussion on texting and walking. Should it be banned? Make sure you have three reasons to support your opinion. Your letter is due Friday.
Love Mrs. McGinnity

Dear Mrs. McGinnity
I do not think texting and walking should be banned. One reason why i think texting and walking should not be banned is because if there is an emergency you will be able to be contacted or you can contact someone. My second reason is that if you need to ever check in with someone you would be able to, for example say your walking home and your mom wants to know where you are and she texts you, you would have to text her back and tell her where you are. My last and final reason is it would be common sense if someone texts you and you could just stop walking go to the nearest sitting area and check your phone. Those were my reasons why texting and walking should not be banned.
From, Will Monteiro
